Photography can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be the only advice I can give is buy the best camera you can afford then when you get more money you can buy speedlights or other lighting devices vary the light modifiers get wireless devices to set your off camera flashes off and most importantly upgrade your lenses.

Other advantage of photography is the hand in hand combination with photoshop.

well it is a good start I definately would not suggest spending thousands of dollars on a camera for your 1st attempt.

I would however reccomend getting 1 that you can control the function on so a manual mode, shutter speed nd aperature priority mode is all you need the 5 MP is not really problem only if you want higher resolution images.

Where to start is tricky to answer what do you like the idea of the 4 main subjects are portaits, landscape, Architectural and Macro

But they are just rough guides you can have things like street photography where you just walk around the streets take pics etc or there are creative photography ie light painting, fire, smoke and water.

Well there you go you dont need to much equipment to get started on then Just go out there and shoot learn about composition and learn to look at the light and how it effects the scene if you want to shoot a tree for example what looks best being backlit so your camera is facing the sun or being front lit so the camera is behind you or maybe side lit the sun to the side.

Learn that just because you see everything at eye level does not mean to say that is the best picture try different levels and angles even if it means laying down on the floor or climbing a tree.

Try not to center everything in a frame the rules of 3rds is a good starting point learn it before you break it.

Rarely have I seen a good picture that is just point and shoot in auto mode try different isos shutter speeds and depth of field.

Try to crop your image in ca,era and not in post production you dont have a lot of spare image on a 5 mp camera to be able to afford cropping half of it away so zoom in as close as possible.

invest in a tripod you can pick them up for $15 all the way up to $thousands the cheaper 1s are fine usually quite light to travel with and throw on your back but they are not as sturdy or stable.

    Re: Hobbies

unfortunately there are several resources out there but the best 1s by far are tutorial dvds and they vary from $25 upto around $200 I would not invest in them until you have been doing it a while get to learn things on your own a bit via free resources post some images for critique and then decide how much you invest in your hobby.

Once you make the decission to step up your gear it gets expensive all though for starting out ebay offers some very good replica chinese imported stuff at a fraction of the price,

the money you spend on tutorial dvds is money you could have spent on equipment so buy a cheap dvd that teaches the basics possibly can find free tutorials on youtube and vimeo get the equipment you want then pay for resources to learn. A good alternative is to get a subscription to kelby training as they have very good photography tutorials.

yep but there are still plenty of resources out there you are not going to become an expert overnight and after reading a few forums etc you need to get out there and find your strengths and weaknesses.
