new but need help

hiya all i have just put a thread on but due to having to make 8 threads i cant put pic on for the effect im after......does the term opacitay mean anything to anyone?????
i am trying to create and fadeing image behind and above my starting image but dont no the correct term for this and only found 1 pic so not sure how commom this effect is

You can post an image right now from your computer not from a site like Photobucket.
Click on the button and browse to the image on your computer.

If that doesn't work let me know.

Opacity is basically transparency.
If you lower the opacity of a layer you make it more transparent.
