Steps that could be taken to do this?

So I would like take that image, remove all the Conan title and create background to fill in the white space it will leave, get rid of the bar code, and then add text behind and above his head as a mask so that i could use the texture of the background masked by text to create letters of a different hue with the same texture...so it would look like part of the painting... advice? steps?

The way I see it, there are three levels off difficulty. The first is easiest, I would delete the blue background, the yellow Conan box, the title first. You'll want to open it in Photoshop and make it a layer from the background. This way, you'll have a nice transparent background.

Second level of difficulty is the "... were stranded in the twentieth century." You can't just cut out the text, you'll need to clone or spot heal it, so that you're not left with opaque holes.

Third level of difficulty is the bar code, because you'll need to either replace it with something. You might just cut out the bar code text and replace it with your own symbol or text. But if you want it gone like it never existed, you'll need to have some basic art skills to replace the missing picture area.

In any event, after you do this, you'll have a nice text-less Conan layer you can put in front of whatever background you want and then do another layer with your text.

Below is my very, very sloppy fifteen minute hack job trying to show basically what needs to be done, but I didn't spend a lot of time cleaning up the second and third sections. This is a .jpg, so the background is gray, but my Photoshop file has it as a transparent layer.

Again, there are probably a thousand ways to do this, most slicker than my suggestions. But it'll give you an idea of what needs to be done. You'll just spend more time on your effort, so it'll look a lot better =)
