Big Problems

I am trying to make a green lantern ring icon for my hard drive on my mac and I cannot figure out how to make it so when I mount it for my new picture the inside of the ring will be transparent so it looks like a ring with the desktop showing through.

It needs to be saved in a format that supports transparency, then converted with an icon conversion program.
