    adjustment to selection

There was another thread with the same problem but it didn't seem to be answered for my use. I can use an adjustment such as Brightness/Contrast or Curves to a selection in a picture but if I promote the selection to its own layer, then the adjustments affect the whole picture. How do I make them work only on the selection layer?
    Many thanks - Christina

There are a number of ways.
You can make the adjustment to the layer only, use Image-Adjustment. It's better though to make the layer a smart object first, then make the adjustment on that layer. That allows you to make changes.
You can create an adjustment layer and clip it to the layer in question.
