    960 grid system

Hi I have been using Smashing photoshop cs5 tutorial. Anyways it has me do this

"For instance, to make a web layout following a grid layout optimized
for a 1024×768 monitor, you’ll create a grid that is 960 pixels wide by 768 pixels tall
with 12 60-pixel wide subdivisions and 11 20-pixel wide gutters (that’s the spaces between the subdivisions."

So the 960 grid system is always 960 pixels wide. How can i understand that better, i want to know how it works and another grid system i should learn to compare to it?

    Thanks everyone
