Post Rays of Color - like a flashlight

I am working on my business card again and I'd like to start adding color. I have something rather specific in mind. First, here's a sample that is a little close to what I have in mind (without the bubbles): Color Rays

Here is my rough draft card (ignore black on black and gradient in the name issues): Business Card

What I have in mind is for rays of color to come out of the camera lens at a sort of 3D angle so they 'appear' as if they are coming off the card. They will go behind the text to eliminate readability and black on black issues. I want the rays to be more diffuse, think what a flashlight beam would look like. Then add 8 more flashlights with different colors and put them all behind the lens.

In short, my question is: How do I go about airbrushing beams of color that are diffuse and end eventually? Different sizes and shapes of beams too. I need the practice so I can put it to practical use making the card.

I use CS4. I'm ok with it, but not very familiar, so treat me as a newbie please.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you mean something along these lines ir more obvious obviously you would put this layer between the lense and text all it is is a light beam brush in different colours on a new layer set to colour and then duplicated a few times

That is very close to what I wanted. I'd like the color rays to extend out of the lens, as if the lens were emitting them itself, so they would extend off it into the whitespace. Also, where do I find the light beam brush?

Like this, only less sloppy (and using layers, of course). I just used the paintbrush with opacity to do this.

Yes, this is very close to what I want. I'd have a few brighter orange/yellow in there too, perhaps filling the top half a little. What tool are you using to create the nice transparent color 'beams'? I'm not sure I have it, or know I have it .

here is the psd you will see what I have done and you can add to it the beams are just bright layers but using a light beam brush found here Light Beams Photoshop & GIMP Brushes | Obsidian Dawn
    psd is herebusiness card3.psd
just in case you dont know how to install brushes
    Rays of Color - like a flashlight-brush.jpg
once you have downloaded the prushes they will be in a zip file unzip them to somewhere you can easily get to
then in photoshop click the arrows highlighted in yellow in pic and select load brushes and navigate to where you extracted them to
    hope this helps
