    I'm useless in photoshop

I'm trying to make a black rectangle with a hole in it. I've got the transparent background and the rectangle, but for the life of me can't figure out how to punch a hole in it. It feels like it should be really simple and I bet it is. Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Sequel

When you draw your circle over the square you need to activate the subtract selection option:

Its the 15th icon along in this picture, if you hover over them you will see a description (In PS). Should have what you are looking for in no time The above is for Photoshop CS5 if you have another version that option will still be available but might be in a slightly different position.

    Here's another way....

    1. Make your rectangular selection using the rectangular marquee tool.
Note: Make sure your layer is not locked...For example the background layer is locked by default. (Make a new layer)

    2. Choose the colour you want for the rectangle (Foreground colour). Hit Alt + Backspace to fill with colour.

    3. Choose the elliptical marquee tool and select the hole you need. Hit the Delete key on your keyboard.
Note: Holding down the Shift key while dragging your selection will ensure that the select is perfectly round.

With any selection made...use the Arrow keys on your keyboard to move/reposition the selection.

    ...YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE...

Webwize way is much better, since you get a vector mask, and that means you can resize your rectangle as much as you want, without losing quality.
