Totally Frustrated Because I Can't Find a Tutorial On How to To This Simple Task

    Hi everyone,

I have a small amount of Photoshop experience, but for the life of me I can't find a way to achieve the effect on this website: danielpowter.com/ . The part I'm talking about is the log for where it says "Daniel Powter: Under the Radar" near the middle of the page (without scrolling). I'm talking mainly about how the designer manages to "paint" splurge it with white painted dots and how they splurge over some of the letters to make it look like a faded look, like parts of each letter are missing.

I've tried almost everything and it just doesn't even come close.

Can someone please tell me how to do this, or find a tutorial. I've searched about everything. And is this method called paint splurging? Splattering? Or what?

    Thanks so much,

    Malachi

Thanks so much! Not sure why I didn't recognize it might not be a font. But this was the first time I've ever installed a font. I was about to respond back and ask you how you made the letters white on that background (I did it on the website first without seeing the download button and it only came out in blue letters with a white background). But I googled it. Thanks so much for helping me find out what font that was. By the way, how did you know that? I tried looking up the source code, but couldn't find anything. Had you already used the font before?

I was going to say it looks like simple text with a graphic that's clipped to the text. Also, on the clipped graphic you could very easily add a layer mask to it and with a brush and foreground color set to white, paint around the clipped graphic to reveal portions outside of the clip. The one thing to remember when working with fonts is that not everyone has the same fonts installed on their computer. Taking this into mind, if I didn't have the font installed on my computer I wouldn't be seeing what you're seeing. This isn't a rule or anything, but it is a best practice to either rasterize uncommon fonts, or use one that's common to both Windows and MAC computers.

I was going to give you more or less the explanation stuff just gave, since I didn't know it was a font. Of course it had to be made by someone once upon a time. The way I would do it:

    Make the text layer.
Create the design layer and duplicate it.
Clip the design layer to the text.
Move the duplicate design layer below the text and invert it.

So many ways to do the same thing in Photoshop.

    Anyway, that's how I'd tackle it ...
