    "Open with" problem

    CS4

Two days ago photoshop disappeared from "open with" right click drop box menu, for .jpg and .png at least. If i try select program I can navigate to 64 and 32 bit photoshop.exe, but if i select either nothing happens. Nothing changes. No error message. Zilch. I should add that it is not in "other programs" either.

I can open any graphic file by opening Photoshop and selecting file/open.

I tried a system restore to four days ago. No change.
I tried a system restore to eight days ago and got restore point corrupted message.

Does anyone have any idea why this has happened and/or how it could be fixed.

I am currently visiting my aged Father and will be unable to try a reinstall back at home till 23rd March.

That's not a PS issue, this a Windows "Program - file association" problem, sometimes windows messes it up.

Try this, It may help you.

Change which programs Windows uses by default

This sounds like a Windows problem not a PS problem, that shouldn't happen.

Will PS start properly if you just open the program?

    Re: "Open with" problem

Deleting preferences had no effect. (Preferences do not seem to include file associations.)

Start/Default programs does not list Photoshop. This is the same as the "open with" dialogue in that respect.

Photoshop opens normally, and any graphics file can be opened within photoshop with "File/open".

    Wierd.

    Re: "Open with" problem

I wouldn't have believed it would help but......

I ran CCleaner after deleting preferences as per earlier suggestion. No change, no "Open With" PhotoShop.

Noticed at techspot today CCenhancer22 so thought I'd download it and try it
Ran CCleaner registry cleaner (and I kinda thought these sort of tools were moderately useless but harmless) and got heaps of photoshop references, so cleared them all.
Ever hopeful, open and close Photoshop, then try "Open with" on a .jpeg - PhotoShop is back! All fixed!

Ah, then you probably would not have noticed open with being out of action, but we all have our own habits in how we use a program. I am just happy that my preferred method works again.
