downsizing

I have a camera (now) that takes rather large photos (4.5MP and up), and am wondering if there's a way to downsize the jpg file size in batches - say 50 photos at a time, or whatever.

Can Ps do that?

Use Bridge agent, it will do all that for you.

If you want to do it in photoshop then open up 1 image record an action of the image resizing process and then save the action and image.

close the image then go to file> automate> batch process it will ask you for the action a folder that has all your images in and then for you to to set an output location. After a few seconds - miniutes you will see a new folder full of all your images resized.

You should also get a function on your camera Jpeg fine (large) Jpeg med and jpeg small

if it is a dslr you will probably get a set of numerous raw functions that are like Raw, Raw +Jpeg fine, Raw + jpeg med, or Raw+ jpeg small.


I have my camera setup to raw + Jpeg fine as that allows you to take pictures without the need for processing and then makes the images you really like a lot more customisable with the raw version. However this can be quite spacious and if you are like me once your camera is out you will fill up a memory card so you may need to look at investing in the largest sd card you can find

I have 8+ Gb 1s also I have the extreme lll editions as they are fast write speeds so if you are burst firing raw+jpeg fine you are looking at a card that can be writing several hundred mbs a second.

Oh and a new camera means a new passion for photography there is something about getting a good quality camera that makes you want to go out and keep shooting new pictures getting more and more creative. So the next thing on your list of presents I would highly recommend Adobe lightroom it converts the size and develops pictures so much easier via batch processing features. I love adobe lightroom the only critique is that the program seems relatively simple but is very computer power intensive which means it can run slowly at times.

If you're just going to downsize the file when they come out of the camera you should check your camera settings.
Most cameras have a setting to change the size of the image from large, medium, or small maybe with even more steps in between.

One of my cameras goes from 18MP to .35MP with many steps in between
My P&S goes form 10MP to .3MP with several steps in between, check your manual.

With that said I wouldn't step down.
I would shoot with the highest possible setting the camera has.
4.5MP is a 2.2MB file, storage is cheap.

I'll shoot all my photos at a nice high res no problem (I have an 8-gb card). My issue is, I have in-laws in Asia, and want to send them a lot of these pix. They don't much care what the resolution is, so lower res means I can fit more when I FTP them.

That's the only reason. I think 8MP is a good size for everyday shooting, and my new camera goes up to 18MP.
