CS3 Files being saved as PS7

I recently upgraded to CS3 from PS7. Loaded CS3 and then uninstalled PS7 and kept all shared files as I have other Adobe apps loaded. Now when I save files in psd format from CS3 the files are saved as a PS7 file but the icon shows up as an orphan file. When I go to reopen the files, CS3 will not recognize the files. The only way I can access them is to do a drag and drop the files into the open CS3 application. The saved psd file shows up with that generic MS icon that indicates that there is no existing application on the machine associated with this file type.

What can I do to correct this? MS won't let me associate the orphaned files with CS3 using the standard right click MS utilities in file properties. I am running XP Pro SP2.
