save single layer as image

hi all

this is my first post so plz be nice lol

i am trying to make a nav bar (cs3) with slanted rectangular buttons. i can slant the rectangle as a layer over a background (create new > then new layer > rectangle tool > skew) but when i save it as a button i still have the background behind it so its no good and if i make the background the same color it jus looks like a rectangle button.
i'm only new to photshop so maybe this is simple but i cant work it out!
