    Hello

I'm working on a singer's site, he wants one of his songs to be played whenever his site is accessed. Please guid me how to do this. I'm using dreamweaver but i'm not good in html. I also want to give "stop music" or "stop song" button. Is it possible?

    thanks in advance

    Adding sound to webpages

Sound files are very large. You first have to decide what format you want to use. Some require plug-ins to operate.

Wav has good sound quality and doesn't require a plugin but they are not compressed. If your friend wants an entire song on the site, it will be a long wait for viewer to load.

MP3 is a compressed format and can be streamed but requires a helper application or a plugin. Quicktime, Win Media Player or RealPlayer can play mp3 files. Streaming means the music starts playing before the song is completely downloaded. Some server-hosts can't accomodate streaming, you should check first.

Ra, Ram, RPm or Real Audio offers best compression and can usually be streamed from a normal server-host. real Audio is a popular plug-in and most users already have it.

You can link sound files or embed them. Embedded would probably be your best choice because you want a on/off volume control on the page.

Ok save your audio into the best format for your needs. If you want to use DW click the plugin button in the objects panel or choose Insert, media, plugin.

In the property inspector, click the folder icon to browse for the audio file or type the name of the link.

Enter the width and height of the audio controls. Usually 144 X 60 make them as small as possible.

Have fun and keep us posted on how it works.

    Adding sound to webpages

Before you give up, consider many music sites give short clips of the songs.

I did a site for a clock store selling musical clocks --I used a small sound bite to give the viewer a taste. http://www.clocksclocks.com/ see left menu bottom. It pops up only because the clocks are animated also.

I used Flash to make the sound clip but there are other applications that are easier to use for clips, I just happened to have Flash.

I'm sure you've seen the sound bites on MusicMatch JukeBox and other sites that sell CDs. Its not really hard to do.

so, it also depends on whether or not he wants his music out there in whole songs free of charge. If you link to an mp3 file, for example, people can save it to their hard drive and NOT have to go and buy it.

I love Wavepad. It's only $50 and is VERY user friendly for converting song formats into other formats. you can also choose the quality of the say, mp3 file. less quality makes it smaller, sound is not bad, but it won't be like if they went and bought the cd. you can also make it mono instead of stereo which gives them a reason to buy the cd also.

Using flash makes the resultant music file NOT accessable for them to download. (although, as a designer, I have at times, I will admit, used the source code to find "the file" and download it if I am despirate to have it for something. Not that most surfers would know how to do that. I have grabbed files that have surprised myself at times. where there is a will.....)

BTW, myspace is a great place for a musician to display snippets of music, or even whole songs, and have control over whether or not the person is allowed to "own" it free of charge.

I also HATE Real audio. and I will not download RA files. Real audio installs spyware and other junk - is my understanding. I use a program called "realplayer alternative". same with quicktime. I have to use it now because of my video camera - it insisted I install it even with quicktime alternative installed, but I have always used "quicktime alternative" instead of quicktime also. both are loaded with junk - again, is my understanding. Don't hear that as an absolute. i am surely NOT an expert in spyware.
