Photoshop Tutorial – What Are JPGs?

What are JPGs? This Video Tutorial explains what JPGs are made of, without getting too technical. I talk about when they are great to use, and when you should avoid them like the plague. The link also includes a full writeup about the topics covered in the video, for those who prefer to read or...

    Lightroom Collection Question

I spent a week investigating the current DAM landscape, and it's worse than ever. MediaPro is crash prone (the one we are leaving), ACDSee would not read all our RAW formats, Aperture took 35 minutes to import 300 images before I force quit. Plus Aperture is barely supported anymore (and no...

    Lightroom Collection Question

I cant find an answer to this, hoping a lightroom 5 user has an answer, Google not helping. I'm new, and fighting my way through its oddities. If I tag an image red, with 5 stars, and put it into a collection, it shows in one collection, and 2 smart collections. While this physically works...

    Extract versus marquee tool

I was at a shoot like 2.5 months ago. I told the photographer to "Put the camera, here." You know the first thing he did was slide it over 6 inches, so half the models hair was floating between pipes and shadows behind her head. Added 45 minutes of cloning work... 6 times. (rolling eyes)

    Extract versus marquee tool

OnOne "Perfect Mask" is a rebranding of "MaskPro". Topaz has "ReMask". I've never tried "FluidMask". "Refine "edge" is a fine tool, when it does not make me wrestle it to the ground. While they all have their pluses and weaknesses, I can't say I am a super fan of any of them. Depending on the...

    Extract versus marquee tool

Color Range, with a manual cleanup using Quickmask. After creating a mask, I would apply it to the layer. If it has something more complicated like flowing hair, I would follow up with your recommendation of Refine Edge (Otherwise known as Mask Edge. Way to confuse there, Adobe). While this is...

    Scratch Disks Full Error

Bringing up an old post, but the answer I believe is the Windows 7 and 8 permissions on the disk. Certain folders need Admin access. I think the answer was to find the actual file on the disk, right click, and run as administrator. Then you can change the scratch disk. I had this issue a few...

Color Spaces and Color Profiles Tutorial

I've released a new video on understanding the differences between Color Spaces and Color Profiles. This is always a misunderstood topic, so I hope this helps. It is 8 only minutes long. http://www.theartofretouching.com/blog/color-spaces-and-color-profiles I also have an older video on the...

    Extract versus marquee tool

They still have the awful Magic Eraser and Background Eraser Tool, if you like to punish yourself. Will they ever put the amateur tools into Elements, and empty out Photoshop for the professionals? I would take the time to clean out my Menu Items list, if they would let me empty out 70 of the...

Accidentally resized my client work hi-res file to web res. Help me please :( :( :(

Re: Accidentally resized my client work hi-res file to web res. Help me please :( :( I will no longer use Actions to resave files because of just this thing. Last year I made an action to open the Layered TIF, and Save As a lo res JPG onto the desktop. After running though 20ish files, I...

    Another Self-Portrait Before/After..

I only spent like 10 minutes on this, so dont over think it, but this is what I had in mind. Remove the sunken eyes, darken the hair, left and bottom. I also wrapped the front of the vest, around the back (left side). Now you are looking where I want you to look. FYI - I did 95% in Camera Raw...

    Another Self-Portrait Before/After..

You have darkend the eye areas (forehead, sockets). these should be lightened, and so should the whiles of the eyes (ever so slightly). The flyaways are minor, but could be removed. I think what would help this image the best, is if you darkened the background, and (your) right shoulder. Those...

    Photoshop challange

Yeah, you need tomask out the child, and replace the floor with some stock photo. With Google you can search for images larger than "insert size". So you can look for something high enough quality.

    Recent Work

Thank you very much. It was a team effort, but yes, we shot everything ourselves. Background is in New York, the model (from Abercrombie and Fitch) was in studio, and birds were being thrown into the air. Good times.
