Thank you so much for the encouragement, i was really really upset lol. Actually I decided to trash the photo, there was just no saving it.
I just restored the old background and tweaked it a tiny bit. I am such a photoshop noob lol.

I'm not great with photoshop (I can only use the paint tool)... how can I turn the brown areas pure white and only leave the black words and lines? I tried to use the paint tool to "paint" the brown areas white but it takes hours...
I'm wondering what this method is called, taking a photo such as that on the left and turning it grey-ish like the right. I am not looking to make it desaturated. The one on the right allows you to recolor the photo with different hues. Thanks for all your help!

Edit: I like to create pretty wallpaper patterns for my desktop, I usually go into Layer> New Fill Layer > Pattern... Sometimes the patterns would be too big...or it is vertical when I want it horizontal. So I have to go through the whole process of flatten...
