    One way that may also help is that once you have the "woman" highlighted with the lasso tool (got the marching ants crawling around her), then go to LAYER--> NEW --> NEW LAYER VIA COPY. After that's done, you'll see that a duplicate of the "woman" has been copied to her own layer above...
