    I am not sure for what I will need the photos in the future so I work with quite the highest resolution my camera can produce. If my file sizes are quite "normal" for that, I will just stock up on HDDs then. Out of curiosity I still want to see some hard calculations which show me how to arrive...

    The picture size is mostly about 7000x5000 pixels. And I use about four to five layers most of the time.

    I was working on a copy of the lowermost layer mostly. There was no lock or anything on it, so I don't know why it's not editable...I can upload the .psd file anyway, but maybe tomorrow, it's really late here now.

    Well, Shift+Ctrl+Alt E works. I really don't know why, but it works...I mean it's just a merged copy of all the modifications I've done, right?

    I notice that if I deactivate the uppermost high pass filter (for the rough contours) the artefacts I want to remove disappear. Don't know if that has something to do with the tools...The file itself is HUGE. Can I upload this???

    I only reset Clone and Patch tool. Did nothing for me. Could there be some interference with the Smartfilters or the Levels adjustment layer?

    Resetting doesn't do anything. I am on Windows 10 and my PS version is PS CC 2017. Already tried "All Layers". No effect.

    Thanks! This already looks very nice! I will try to use the suggested workflow, but I think it will take some time... Are there any special adjustments for the smudge and brush or did you modify them during the painting (I mean except for size obviously).
