    everyone, thanks again for posting. I've found the problem. I use Picasaweb to host the website images. It recently moved into Google+ and at that point came with some new settings which autoenhance images when they are uploaded. I've disabled these, reuploaded the images and they are fine...

    I use Photoshop (elements) to create images for banners and sliders etc on my company website, intranet and jobs website. My computer's graphics card recently failed and so I replaced it with a new one. I'm now adding an image to a banner slider on one of my websites, as always using photoshop...
