    You could also try using the blur tool and try drawing around the image that you want to blend in with the background with the blur tool.

    Reducing using Image Size

    I usually just reduce the image size in one step. If you fear that you might lose detail, you can increase the resolution before you reduce the image size.

    You could also try the polygonal lasso tool, and draw out the six sides.

    You could probably also create a new layer, fill that layer in, and then put that layer underneath the text.
