    I have tried out the bevel/emboss tool but somehow I cant get the ellipse to be transparent so that the wooden texture below it can be visible: Any suggestions on how I can make it partially transparent?

    Thanks a lot for all the replies. This is a great forum! Thanks Hawkeye for the emboss/bevel idea. Collleague, your rendition looks really good. Any ideas how to make the grains of the hollow wooden hemispheres also curve? I will post my attempt soon.
