you can offset the stroke I believe. You have to do it in the appearance panel. Then you won't need two layers- xano

Now I'm really not sure what I'm looking at with that picture you have or what method you're using to make this tower but I'm assuming that you are using a 2D image. As far as I know there are two ways to go about doing what you want. You can use the 2D shape with a gradient or gradient mesh...- xano
