Creating 50/60s noir movie poster?

I love the vintage look of old movie posters. Was wondering how I'd achieve that effect. I'm planning to use it for custom designed hockey cards (so they would have a lot less text, maybe just the name of the player and a team he played for).

Basically I need to take a real image of a player (many of these will be black/white images for old players) and make it look illustrated plus create that nice pastel or paint effect of these posters.

Google about ow the artists created them back in the day, some interesting stuff. As they had nothing compared to what we have now. My guess would be a lot of re coloring with the pen tool
