I'm tearing my hair trying to figure out how to select one of these bottles.

Right! This setting was set to Subtract Front. It should have been set to Combine Shapes on the dropdown. To correct this result all one has to do is change the setting after the transparent one is shown.

I'm tearing my hair trying to figure out how to select one of these bottles.

You have to paint IN the mask with black to remove pixels, paint white to recover them. The mask should be white when first applied. Painting with white in this mask at this point will have no effect.

    Photoshop DPI question

One could make a good case here for use of vector images. It just doesn't seem practical to create output for a huge sign as a bitmap image but I suppose one has to do what fits the situation.

I would use a curves adjustment layer in PS. I don't have elements so your on your own there. But I think curves before anything else. Adjustment Layers

Couple of different ways. Easiest for me would be to add a Color Fill Layer . Layer/New Fill Layer/Solid Color. Pick the magenta color from the color picker. Then when you apply it, everything will be magenta. Now, click in the mask to select it and enter Ctrl i (eye) which will invert the...
