    hue/saturation, just pentool the object you want to change in color or you can crop the object put it in new layer and use the hue saturation..

    or you can try hue/saturation instead of desaturate the selection, then play the colors from there...

    getting a license copy of photoshop is really worth.. but sad that you don't have a budget right now, but yes you can use that site for the meantime with limitations.
