    Grid Backgrounds!

Has anyone noticed that the background color for every other message is approximately F7F3F7 ?(an off-purple color?) This would make the attachment stand out more. I was looking at the grid behind a white background in PS, so even on a crt monitor it looked kind of light.

    Grid Backgrounds!

That looks great! :righton: Just one thing though, I can't see it on my monitor because I have an LCD screen. The only way I can reasonably see it is if I pull the middle slider in Image-->Adjustments-->Levels to 0.35. Don't use this as a rule but just be aware that a lot of screens are going to...

    Grid Backgrounds!

Sidenote on the subject of patterns used within Photoshop: because I know no way to accurately find the dimensions of a certain pattern once its defined, I usually save the dimensions of the original marquee with the name of the pattern. Make sure your ruler units are pixels to get a good...

    Grid Backgrounds!

Looks like this one is only 8x8 pixels. Id suggest making your own background, but here is what it looks like closeup, minus the jpg artifacts. You could replicate this by going File-->New and making your document 8x8 pixels and then start drawing on it with the pencil tool(use the [ key to make...

    Grid Backgrounds!

actually if youre making a pattern for a webpage, you dont even need to go to edit--->define pattern. this is only for patterns you want to use within photoshop. you should just save the image within your images web folder. for a grid, its probably fine to save it as a .gif via the save for web...

Thanks gaussian! Well, i'd say realneedforspeed has some pattern making problems. This might help me help you: What are you trying to achieve? :\

    Grid Backgrounds!

The size of the new doc doesnt matter, but it should be bigger than your pattern. Push the little arrow on the side of that box and your pattern should be somewhere near the bottom.

    Grid Backgrounds!

Photoshop does not automatically generate larger patterns from the ones youve defined. It assumes you will define it and then use other tools to apply it. The thing about patterns is that they are just one square, but each one is a square that will connect on all sides with itself. Its sort of...

    Grid Backgrounds!

Well there are many ways to duplicate your pattern. To fill the document with your new pattern, go to edit-->fill. Then choose pattern from the dialog box, and chose your pattern from the list. To paint your pattern on something, use the pattern stamp which can be accessed by typing S, or...

    Grid Backgrounds!

Make sure that youre using the Rectangular marquee, not the lasso or any other selection tool. Only the square selection tool will let you go to edit-->define pattern. :righton:

    Transform tool

The skew and distort tools are very similar(just like all of the transform tools), but skew emphasizes changing only one side while constraining another to a straight edge or moving one side up and down, whereas distort is more flexible and won't constrain your movements as much. The skew tool...

    Curves controls

Yeah Professional Photoshop is an awesome book. Dan Margulis really knows his stuff. I agree with all that you say and im not saying that none of the color correction tools are worth as much as curves, just that if there was one tool I would chose it over any other. When I started using it, I...

color correction on uncalibrated or bad color monitor

Well stated. I read this in a linguistics book once...it makes a very keen statement. And by the way, when people help as much as Erik does, maybe its not the best thing to point out his picayune spelling errors. }P }P [honesty] :righton:

    Curves controls

If youre doing any serious color correction, curves is the way to go. It takes levels, brightness/contrast, color balance, and almost every color altering tool and puts it in one box. Its daunting at first, I admit, but definitely worth learning. Good work Lee!
