    I partially agree, but there's no need to merge...you will loose the ability to change or create new text. To make the reflection, simply select the area, hide the background and do a Ctrl+shift+c. Then Ctrl+v and you'll get a copy to make the reflection.

    Add a layer mask to the text layer. In layer blending options check the "layer mask hides effects" checkbox. paint areas in the layer mask to get the desired effect.
