    Removing graininess due to low light?

    you did use a mobile phone to take this image right ? man they suck in low light , even many digital cameras... now it's the balance between noise and detail and the photo is in very low resolution.. Of course you can achieve better results than this.

    I would suggest doing cloning / healing on a new layer (with sample all layers selected) and then playing with the blending modes of that new layer , overlay maybe? but remember this : once a detail is lost in photograph it's very hard to recreate it specifically when it comes to shadows

    I'm maybe wrong but I think crop tool meant to behave like that. Did you try adding a white later beneath the images to see if that helps ?
