    Looks like the source photo's where taken correctly first off, secondly, they used some blur to make certain parts of the images stand out like in photo #1 where the little dishes are like POW and the background is blurred out..

    Use the Quick mask selection, then white it out, find some honey comb patterns cut out your honey comb and replace it with the white pattern. You also need to become friends with the pen tool..

    It's called Half Toning, simply download some Half Tone patterns, and either overlay them or do some Styling in your Layer Styles panel...
