    your original question isn't clear. Are you simply trying to enlarge your existing photographs? If so, then changing the resolution won't matter. Just enlarge the physical dimensions. I don't see how changing the resolution will matter anyways. If the photos are at 72dpi to begin with, then...

    for the "S", keep it the way you have it, and just select through all the layer's blending modes (normal, multiply, overlay, etc) until it achieves what you want. "Color" may have not been the exact blending mode you need- try scrolling through them all.

    there is a solution for this. lower the opacity of the layer that you're making a selection on. Now the lines of the path tool will be more visible.
