    backlit photo effect - please help

    Make sure your background is white, go to image, adjustments, black and white, mess around with the presets and opacity, then make a black rectangle to cover the person, create a clipping mask (if this doesn't work, rasterize the layer), change layer to overlay, and play around with the opacity...

    Just make a black rectangle, merge the two layers, create a clipping mask, and put the layer to "hue" or "overlay." That would make it blend just fine.

    CS4 cropping problem

    All I can suggest is that you upgrade to CS5 or CC. They fixed a lot of simple things and made the whole program a lot smoother.
