    Looks like a job for the pen tool. You'll have to trace over the image with the pen tool.

    Need Help with Filling in Pen Selection

    I don't consider myself a newbie anymore, but far from a pro:) but I have a thought on it. Do you have the layer with the path in it selected? If the path is filled with white when you created it, then you click on another layer and fill it, well you get the idea.
