    As described by Sam. Once a selection is made of the colour that you would like to replace, use this active selection and paint on a new layer in Color Mode. Use curves adjustment layers to adjust the contrast, saturation, etc. with this same selection.

    As has been stated, you may have rushed this one. My suggestion is to constantly refer back to the original to see what effect, negative or positive, each filter, tool, etc has made. Applying these changes to a duplicate is always best so that any results that don't look right can be masked out...
