    My suggestion is for you to make a duplicate of the original layer. Then make a new blank layer and add a Transparent Mask. Fill with black. Using a white color brush, paint the areas you want to change. You will see the painted areas in the preview pane, but not in your workspace window...

    For the textures, the creator probably desaturated a rough texture, and then overlaid it using maybe a Linear Light layer mode. They likely lowered the fill of the texture layer.

    You'd be surprised at the number of tattoo artists who use templates. Not only does it save time, they are also less likely to make a grave mistake on the recipient's skin. Very carefully.
