    Come on, think about it, - the selection has a fine halo of transparency around it, saving the file makes it permanent!

    Many thanks for your reply BlueInGreen, all good and helpful. I'll put together some more images to better illustrate what I'm trying to achieve and if you feel inclined perhaps you might try and help me further. Strangely, feather is set to zero - that was my first thought.
