    How to get rid of Shadows in a portrait

    The best way to "remove" shadows is to get them right when you take the picture. You can: -have the person stand further from the wall -use multiple lights -use different kinds of light modifiers (i.e. softboxes, umbrellas, etc) on your lights to help give more diffused, soft lighting...

    How do you detect Lens distortion?

    Ken Rockwell's website has tons of information and articles about lens distortion. Just google "Ken Rockwell" and you should be able to search his site for the information you need.

    RGB Color Separation

    I have some videos about this topic in a blog post I made regarding how to select hair in Photoshop. The videos show how to use the information in the different channels (both LAB and RGB) to make it easier to modify parts of the image. Maybe that'd help you with your question.

    Best file format to save as?

    I'm putting in a "third" for the .PSD file format. It saves all the layer information and modifications you make in Photoshop, but the files can get pretty massive pretty quickly if you're not careful. If you just want to save it and not do much editing, JPEG is pretty much the standard though.

    What digitalcamera should I get?

    My parents and sister have owned many Canon PowerShot cameras over the last few years and have been very happy with them. I have a Nikon D90 myself, and love the heck out of it, but it's more than what you want to spend. I'd recommend checking out the PowerShots.
