    Easiest method to do it is make the text in a 3d program. Blender 3D can do it, I'm sure, and thats free.

    I like it, but you must add a border. Borders create everything better, for some unexplained reason.

    Splitting a shape

    I'm having a tough time visualizing what you are trying to do, but I'll try to assist. To 'split' it, I assume you are referring to one image that encompasses one layer. If this is the case, just create a selection of the half you want to split, cut or copy it, then paste that half as a new layer.
