    You also sometimes have actually add the set of brushes to your brush palette. The name of it should be in the list of brush sets after you restart the program.

    If you added new brushes that didn't come standard with the install, they should still be in the brushes folder you put them in. Same with scripts and actions.

    Transparent background problem

    I see the shadow... And no transparent pixels. Your white background layer has no holes, so there can't be any transparent pixels. The way paths show up used to freak me out because it looked wrong. Maybe that's it?
