merging layers

    I just purchased ps - and need basic help! Please!

    I am trying to create (2) Layers and then to merge them - to simply use the background layer (a plaid pattern) as the border for the other layer - an image of a golfer. I go round and round - it seems to make one the background layer - then replace it with the other image instead of putting it...

    Merging layers

    Hi, I'm trying to add text (just the ouline if the text) to an existing jpec. Each time i add a new word it creates a new layer but when I merge the layers all the words dissapear. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? Any advice will be much appreciated.
