Changing from B/W to 2 colors

I have a rather simple question. I have a black and white photo, which I want to change (let us say) to Orange and Blue. What steps do I go through. I know that with an "overlay" I can change the Black part, and I can even invert it. But how do I get BOTH colors to change?

This may not be what you're seeking. But assuming, you're starting with a black and white photo (and it's in gray scale mode), you should be able to select duotone in the mode window (I'm using CS4).

One you select duotone, a box will pop up. From there you can select the colors you want to use and even play with the curves for each color until you get an effect that you like.

You can also do three and four colors from this same box by selecting tritone and quadtone.

Background white still white

Thanks for the suggestion. The duo-tone trick enables me to adjust the "black" part of the photo just fine. But the background white stays white. When I add the second color, it simply overlays the first one but doesn't affect the background.
I hope you can lead me step-by-step through this last stage, since you were very helpful with the first.
