To easily create a contour map from a photo, go to filter-->cutout. Set Edge Simplicity to 0 and number of levels to 8. Then go to filter-->find edges. There it is. You might want to desaturate it and/or add a hue/saturation adjustment layer depending on the effect you are going for. Just thought i'd share.
Addition: this works best on higher resolution images, the higher the resolution, the better the effect.

Excellent info Tranq... although, I'm not sure what I'd do with a contour map at this stage, bit further than I've explored yet... ;\
 
You could use it as a basis for another style of line drawing. Put a duplicate underneath and set to linear light. Tweak as necessary...
