Additionally you can use the Marquee selection tool on a new layer and the different "add to selection", "subtract from selection" etc. options to create some very complex shapes. Once created as a selection simply stroke the selection if you want it as a pixel based shape. Alternatively once you have created your complex selection (IE still with the marching ants) go to the paths tab and at the bottom select "Make work path from selection". Once the selection is a path you can manipulate the points if you want and you could even go to the Edit menu and select define custom shape to make your complex shape in to a custom shape available to you under the custom shape tool.

Once you start exploring shapes can be really useful!
