I am not a guru, just someone who needed to feather out an edge of a photograph for subsequent laser engraving onto wood.


This (finally) worked for me:

Start with the image in a single background layer.

Duplicate the background layer.

Working on the duplicate layer, select the desired region of the photograph. For me this was in about 1/8" from the edge all around.

Click the refine edge button and make the desired adjustments using the sliders.

Click OK

Click the Add mask button at the bottom of the layers panel.

Delete the original background layer.


You can now save the "feathered" photo, for printing, engraving, etc.
