Hello,

I'm a newbie if it's about photo shopping and I have a problem.
In the picture below there is a butterfly with(in this case) an israelian flag.
So, I want that butterfly out. I tried many things, but it's ugly when i do it.

Can someone help me/give me tips how to do that properly?

I certainly don't want to dissuade you from increasing your photoshop skills, but, may I ask, what's so special about that particular image that makes you want to invest time in it and probably never come out with a really good result.

This is in contrast to simply searching Google Images for either {butterfly israel flag}, {white butterfly}, or {israel flag}, depending on exactly what you want. FWIW, there a huge number of similar, but technically better images available if you do the first search.

I searched the internet first of course... Well these butterflies were used at the Eurovision Song Contest this year, i'm now trying to copy the design they used. So that means also the butterfly. It normally was video with a butterfly flying on the spot you see in the picture. But i watch the internet every day but can't find some... so that's why I tried myself, and that didn't work out like i wanted it so i'm here now.

When you say you want to cut out could you explain that, do you mean you want the butterfly with the blue flag symbols still within the butterfly image but shaped just as a butterfly?

It is a very low resolution image, is entirely possible but you have to create your own edges smooth them out to make it look proper in the area where the butterfly antennas are. Very tough to do, not an easy selection to make, probably need to create your own antennas that are just not there at this resolution

It was a printscreen from a 1080p video, maybe paint made it a low resolution... I don't know if this butterfly have antennas. It's a thing that can be left out from the picture. I tried things with magic wand, eraser and all that kind of things... Adobe photoshop cs5 has a lot of things i don't know anything about.

It's entirely possible scenario to cut out the butterfly to get your edges to make it look good will take a little bit of time. are you familiar with Photoshop?

You would need to refine the edges without a doubt, are you familiar with selection process? If so, you should use pen tool to get the shape you want after you've increased the size of the file resolution. copy the selection past it, or open a new document with the clipboard size, leave it transparent background, after you get your new layer or document refine your image edges and decide on how you want to do the antenna area.

OK - Perhaps there are constraints that you can not divulge that require you to use that image.

If you couldn't already tell, I personally would *never* take on a job that started with the image you posted. You have already experienced one of the problems (ie, attempting to extract it from the background), but I assure you there will be other problems resulting from it being out of focus and low resolution that are almost impossible to solve.

So, the pragmatist in me says:

a) You will never get a good quality image from the one you posted. Put differently, "you can't make a silk purse out of a pig's ear".

b) Perhaps there is a way to relax the unstated constraints that are forcing you to use that image.

c) It will be vastly easier for you (or a graphic artist) to modify a similar, but technically good image, and make it closer to what you want, than try to fix up a poor image. In fact, the latter may be nearly impossible, whereas warping the shape of the subject, removing the blue star, adding blue in the center are relatively easy to do and are more than likely to be of acceptable quality.

d) If you (or a graphic artist) attempts to re-create the image you posted, there will likely be plenty of differences that you aren't currently anticipating.

Just my $0.02,

LOL, iDad - I'm just not sure about the "satisfactory part" ;-) , especially if he plans on using it somewhere else and needs it larger. OTOH, for all we know, maybe all he needs is a 50x50 pixel button.

Here's my shot at the extraction. Like all extractions, one should look at it against a pure white, pure black, transparent, and possibly other solid colors to check the edges. To do this, I show it as an animated GIF. Unfortunately, as expected, the layer with a transparent background does not show up when viewed on the forum, but if he downloads it, he will see it.

Also, to make it look as sharp as possible & help out the OP, I also tried sharpening it up a bit and left it at its original size, but I didn't bother with fake antennae.

I used the feathering technique and then a blur on the edges with no background and white background, black background to check looks pretty good to me. I did not the save the PSD file but I took a snapshot of the website itself in fixed mode and dark looks pretty good to me it's not the best of quality but it works

It hasn't to be perfect... I know it's very hard to do that because the butterfly normally is a video.

I had this... there are some gaps in the wings =P the butterfly will have the dark background at my video(where i want to use it for).

There is the design what i'm trying to copy =)

At least thanks for your help and i'm trying to do it with the pen tool =)

PS - I just went back and checked other photos, and now see that the black fringe around the edges of his wings probably is real. Unfortunately, in the image the OP posted, I couldn't tell for sure against the black background, so I accidentally gave the poor beast an extra, no-cost trim job. I hope he likes his new simplified look. ;-)

If it works for the OP it works for me.......
