Football player effect

Hello everybody,

I am trying to achieve an effect similar to the one around the football player in the picture Picasa Web Albums - PReaidy - Photoshop . I am new to Photoshop and I would really appreciate it if someone could give me some easy to follow steps.

looks like the player was selected roughly 15/20 px out from edge copied pasted back on lower layer then color was added over it and then upper layer was erased in selected areas......that's an easy way
