if I get what you mean

Take your image and duplicate the layer on the duplicate invert the layer control +I or image >adjustments>invert etc

apply a layer mask to the inverted layer and make sure your layer mask is the active layer (just click it in the layers panel)

grab the gradient tool black to white or transparant gradient and play with placing the gradient until your happy.
