As you will undoubtedly hear from lots of other people, the real way to do this cutout is using the pen tool.


If you are not facile with the pen tool, the only automated selection tool that I know of that will do a decent job on this image is an old plugin called Asiva Select.  As you can see from the attached screen grab, it allows one to select very specific ranges of hue, saturation and brightness.   This degree of specificity is necessary for this image because there are large areas of the image that are close to the metal spiral in these variables.


However, even using Asiva Select, the results are far from perfect and need to be touched up.  If you do that, you might as well use the pen tool right from the start.


Full-bore, third party commercial selection tools such as Topaz Select and onOne Mask Pro could also do  a good job and are semi-automated, but they have a significant learning curve.
