Here's the problem, the original artist correctly utilized an "out of focus" effect on the silvery web as it approached the foreground. No matter what technique you use to extract the web, you will be left with hard edges where there were soft ones in the original image. Compare Toms extraction with the original.

I would use the Pen tool to select the web (lots of work) and then add back the original blur with the Blur Tool or Smudge Tool.
