How did you restore photo?

You're welcome @vpk
I used just the tools in Photoshop and Topaz Photo AI. In Photoshop, the primary work was done inside the Camera Raw Filter, and some use was made of the Neural Filter to remove JPEG compression artifacts and initiate colorization. Topaz Photo AI was not as helpful as I had hoped, but I still used their filters as well. Given the JPEG compression artifacts, background noise, and lack of tonality, I ended up using a significant amount of the Camera Raw Filter's masking modes, as well as extensive cloning and healing. The most significant defects were handled in Camera Raw Filter using the remove tool.

I have not yet worked on the face individually, yet as part of the entire process or the restoration. Those steps in the process also uncovered a large number of problems/defects in the background. I am confident that the continuous approach I took could repair that as well, yet I did not have the time to continue working on this image. Instead, I decided to keep the background in its original color, adding a slight Gaussian blur and repairing some of the larger defects. This approach brought more attention to the foreground and the subject at the expense of the background. I know this is not what you requested. Yet, I found that just trying to continue restoration on what you had already started only ended up looking unrealistic and very "Photoshopped" for my level of experience.

Those were the steps I took, and that's also the reason for the background look. I don't have time to do any more work on it, yet I am fine if any other forum member wants to use all or part of what I have done as a starting point for any more work.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I am a hobbyist 75 years old. I am doing restoration mainly for my own use.

You’re welcome @vpk I am retired and also just a hobbyist doing restoration for myself (eg genealogy) and blast from the past images of friends and relatives on their birthdays.
