I'd like to know if something like this is possible to do in photoshop.

I want to create some pyramidish-stone brick wall thing in photoshop. I've played with it for hours and finally have near given up. Does any one know how I might get a round to doing this?

Almost anything is possible in Photoshop - as long as you have the patience for it!

Best way to handle this is to look for "stone texture" on Google or right here on PSG. Then you can either use the burn & dodge to make the outlines of stone blocks, or just a good old black paintbrush - depending of course on the setting.

This tutorial produces quite a good result, and you can vary the type of rock/stone via the contrast & sharpness of the difference cloud you use:

A quick way to proceed from here is to then use a lighting effect again to add the outlines of the stone blocks (just copy the current layer, create a new alpha channel and make block shapes on that), similar to what I did in this quick visualization:
 
Hmm, yeah, I've played much with rock textures before, but I suppose I'm most facsinated with the random chipness and cracks on the stone and around the edges. The example you gave (which I have seen before, actually) is very beveled, and I don't know if such a technique has such a margin for intricate detail.

Start with a background layer and add a texture to it. I made my own texture.

Draw a separate layer with all the outlines on it.
Now it's all up to you how to distort these lines.
I used a few copies of this layer, all with a different purpose.
Some were blurred, others had a diffent color, some were made thinner with liquify, others were smugged, etc.
Add a 50% grey layer on top, blending mode overlay and use dodge and born to add more details.
Paint here and there, add more layers, etc, etc.

This is just a quick one, but it's just get the idea.

But don't try to exactly copy what he did, because that's going to be hard, especially when it comes to copying textures.

Swift, I think you're looking for the "pyramidish-stone brick with intricate details" button under the Filter menu. Can't find it? :P You need to break an image down into various methods/effects which makes creating it a lot faster than simply drawing it. But you'll always need to add a few touches to make it stand out.

You are right that it's very bevelled - it would work fine for a tomb scene where you have a directional light source and it's otherwise pretty dark, but for an area where there is ambient light you'd definitely need it more subtle. But luckily the light render effect allows for this through the various settings. The cracks you'll need a layer or two (or more for), to add the sharpness in their edges. I'll try something flatter (using the method in the tutorial) to see how it turns out and post it here if its satisfactory.
